The cast of characters has changed dramatically, but the San Jose Earthquakes have brought back a winning recipe from 2010: stifling defense with a liberal dose of game-winning goals from Chris Wondolowski.

With three victories in their first four matches – all three secured by goals from Wondolowski – San Jose are enjoying their best opening run since 2003. It’s only their second hot start since being reborn as an expansion team five years ago; the Quakes of 2010 went 5-2-1 en route to the club’s only MLS Cup Playoffs berth in their current incarnation.

Casino M8trix, a giant $50 million card room, is awaiting licensing from the San Jose police department so it may open April 3. But the cops haven’t come calling, which led the casino to ask a judge to get involved.

The police have “cleverly stalled” in making a decision on whether the casino can open, owner Eric Swallow said in court last week, according to the San Jose Mercury News.

For the Sharks to hit that mark, they need to finish the equivalent of 6-3-0. Unfortunately for San Jose, the team hasn’t been able to earn 12 points in a nine-game stretch since mid-January.

Here’s a look at the Sharks’ six remaining opponents:

Boston Bruins, Thursday night at HP Pavilion: San Jose won 4-2 when the teams met at TD Garden on Oct. 22, but Boston has dominated the series at HP Pavilion in recent years.

Phoenix Coyotes, Saturday night at HP Pavilion and March 29 at Jobing.com Arena. The Sharks blew out the Coyotes 6-3 on opening night, but Phoenix has won the next three games – including two 3-0 shutouts.

Colorado Avalanche, Monday night at HP Pavilion: The Sharks have won two of three games so far, but the teams have not met since Dec. 15. The game is the first since the Sharks traded Jamie McGinn to the Avalanche for Daniel Winnik and TJ Galiardi.

Anaheim Ducks, March 28 at Honda Center: The Sharks have lost four of the five games against Anaheim and put in one of their poorest performances of the season in Monday night’s 5-3 loss. The one San Jose victory did come on the road.
